About NUIG Choral Society

The choir that represents the NUIG Choral Society this year is one that has a very promising future. The Choral Society is open to any student of NUIG regardless of singing ability or experience. We're an auditioned choir but nevertheless very talented and sing all styles of music from classical to pop, and participate in numerous events throughout the year both off, and on campus. We are lucky to have Stephen Carroll from the Claddagh School of Music as our conductor.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we are meeting virtually every week for 40 minutes. All Rehearsals will take place on Zoom and are separated into vocal sectionals (SATB). NUIG Students can access rehearsals on the yourspace Calendar which will go live every Monday & Tuesday.

This year we have strived to find new and innovative ways of compiling choir pieces remotely and socialising as a group online. This academic year we performed in 7 virtual productions and participated in the Dawn Chorus Initiative and premiered in the NUIG Virtual Summer Festival as well as compiling our own Christmas Concert with 9 additional choirs based in the West of Ireland.

In previous years we have taken part in choral competitions cross-country including the Sligo International Choral Festival, Cork International Choral Festival, and each year perform at the Relay for Life in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. This year we have been shortlisted as a Finalist in the Cork Choral International Festival. We also are planning our upcoming Virtual Spring Production in aid Cope Galway which will be released on the 30th of April.

We strongly believe that the success of this years choir is outstanding especially in the circumstances. We have enabled a sense of connection amongst our members and we have grown our society greatly as well as building friendships. We focus on improving our musical performance skills as well as vocal technique. We have given our members as much opportunity as possible taking part in virtual videos, and providing access to the Voice of Ireland auditions. We really look forward to getting our Choir back together in person after the pandemic regardless of the barriers we have strengthened as a group during this time. This shows the talent that NUIG has to offer. We are open all singers and don't hesitate to get involved!!!

The NUIG Choral Society is working on an amazing production of the Old Galway Bay arranged specifically for the choral society in NUI Galway. The production is due to be released on St. Patricks Day, the 17th of March 2021. This piece is being performed in a way the choral society can celebrate St. Patricks Day from home. We are extremely excited to share our work with you highlighting the Irish celebration through our performance of a cultural piece of music from Galway.
To audition you will be featured as our solo for the old Galway bay. To find out more information join our rehearsals on Monday or Tuesday. Or Email us at choralsoc@socs.nuigalway.ie
